How to Store and Handle Water Jars Safely at Home

Most of the responsibility for water quality sits with the vendor — sourcing, treatment, sealing. But once a jar is in your home, a handful of storage and handling habits genuinely affect how safe and fresh that water stays until the last litre.

Keep it out of direct sunlight

Prolonged sunlight exposure on a plastic jar isn't just about warming the water — UV exposure can encourage algae growth if any light-permeable spot exists, and heat accelerates any chemical leaching from lower-quality plastic. Store jars in a shaded, cool spot, not a balcony or a windowsill.

Don't top off an old jar with a new one

It's tempting to pour a bit of a new jar into a half-empty old one to save space, but this mixes water of different ages and reintroduces whatever's accumulated in the older jar or dispenser into fresh water. Finish one jar before starting the next.

Clean the dispenser, not just the jar

The jar arrives sealed and clean — the dispenser it sits on usually doesn't get the same attention. The tap, the drip tray, and the internal reservoir (if your dispenser has one) should be wiped down or rinsed roughly every 2–3 jar cycles. This is the single most-skipped hygiene step in most homes, and it's often the actual source of a musty taste people wrongly blame on the water itself.

Check the seal before you install a new jar

A genuine, undamaged seal is your confirmation that the jar hasn't been opened or tampered with since it left the vendor. If a seal looks broken, loose, or missing entirely on delivery, don't install it — flag it with the vendor and ask for a replacement instead.

A simple weekly routine

  • Store new jars upright, in shade, off direct floor contact if possible
  • Verify the seal before installing
  • Finish each jar fully before starting the next — don't top off
  • Wipe the dispenser tap and tray every 2–3 jars
  • Rinse the dispenser reservoir monthly if it has one
