5 Signs Your Drinking Water Isn't as Safe as You Think

"It looks clean, so it's probably fine" is the most common — and most wrong — assumption people make about drinking water. Plenty of contaminants that cause real health problems, from excess fluoride to bacterial contamination, are completely invisible, odorless, and tasteless at the levels that matter. That said, there are a handful of signs that are worth acting on immediately.

1. A cloudy or hazy jar, even after settling

Water that stays visibly cloudy after sitting undisturbed for a few minutes usually means suspended sediment or, less commonly, microbial growth. A little cloudiness right after a jar is filled can be air bubbles and is harmless — but persistent haze is not.

2. A chlorine smell that's stronger than usual

A faint chlorine smell is normal in treated water and is actually a sign of proper disinfection. A strong, noticeably increasing chlorine smell from the same vendor over time can mean they've had to over-treat the source water — worth asking why, since it usually points to a change in their raw water quality.

3. A musty, earthy, or metallic taste

A musty or earthy taste often points to algae or bacterial activity, most commonly from a jar or dispenser that hasn't been cleaned recently. A metallic taste can indicate excess iron or, less commonly, corrosion in the delivery chain. Either way, this is a taste worth trusting — don't finish the jar to "see if it gets better."

4. Residue or a film at the bottom of an empty jar

Some mineral residue is completely normal. A slimy film (as opposed to a dry, gritty residue) is a different story — that's usually biofilm, which forms when a jar or dispenser hasn't been washed thoroughly between refills. This is more often a jar-hygiene issue than a water-treatment issue, but it's just as important.

5. Frequent digestive upset with no other explanation

This is the sign people are slowest to connect to their water, because it's easy to blame food instead. If you or your household notice a pattern of mild stomach upset that improves when you're away from home (travel, staying elsewhere), it's worth treating your regular water source as a suspect, not just your last meal.

What you can't see — and why the vendor matters

None of the above will reliably catch excess fluoride, arsenic, nitrates, or most bacterial contamination — those need an actual water test, not visual inspection. This is exactly why choosing a verified, regularly tested vendor matters more than any at-home check: it puts the burden of testing on someone whose business depends on getting it right, rather than on you catching a problem after the fact.
